WHAT:  40 filmmakers will race the clock and each other to interpret the identical 5-page script and create their film version - all within 48 hours!

 

FORMAT:  All completed films must be burned onto a playable DVD.

 

GUIDELINES:  Please click on 48Hours of Madness Student Film Competition Official Entry Form above for a complete list of specific guidelines. Films must follow these guidelines or they will receive lower scores. Some important things to remember are:

WHEN:  Script received by email 3PM on Friday, March 11, 2011 to be completed and turned in on Sunday, March 13, by 4pm.  Late submissions will receive lower scores.

WHERE:  Films to be turned in at designated locations around San Diego County.

ENTRY FEE: $100 fee to accompany entry form.

Length:  5 minutes or less.

Cast:  Filmmakers are encouraged to cast up to 4 experienced actors and line    them up ahead of time.

Rating:  PG-13 rated (think prime-time TV, not cable, for language, violence, drugs and sex depiction).  Implied/suggested violence may be used but no guns, knives, or other weapons (to reduce danger to filmmakers and actors).  No fights, car chases, or other activities that should/would require stunt work.

Story:  Literal to broad interpretation of script.  Filmmakers choose genre appropriate to tell the story.  Film can be a period piece, comedy, sci-fi, etc.

Location:  The entire film can be shot indoors at a private home.  If filmmakers choose to use a public location, location rights must be obtained.

JUDGING:  Films will be judged on how well they tell the story.  Late entries penalized for every 5 minutes after 4pm Sunday.  As with all BestFest America student film entries, each team will receive Judges' (who are industry professionals) comments and scores on their entry based on:

 

Re-writing / Interpretation (40%):  How unique and original is the interpretation of the script, how engaging, compelling, and believable are the characters, story and dialogue.

 

Creative Excellence (25%):  How well do filmmakers utilize creative ways to support the story in direction, acting, art, wardrobe, camera/lighting, sound, props.

 

Technical Excellence (25%):  How do key aspects of post-production enhance the story in editing, music, sound design, balance, foley, titles and effects.

 

Overall (10%):  How strongly did the entry affect the viewer and elicit an emotional or intellectual response.

PRIZE:  :  $250 First place prize  for High School and College winners.  Up to 5 team members receive complimentary passes to the screening at UltraStar Mission Valley Cinemas at Hazard Center, Sunday, 1pm,  March 27, 2011.
